Dr. Borenstein is a clinical psychologist with 15+ years’ experience, who has worked in hospitals, residential treatment centers, outpatient clinics, and schools, with children, adolescents, and adults from ethnically and racially diverse backgrounds. Providing both short- and long-term psychotherapy, Dr. Borenstein specializes in treating individuals, couples, and families, presenting with anxiety, depression, trauma, sexual abuse/assault, sexual orientation and gender identity issues and/or personality disorders.
Dr. Borenstein’s therapeutic approach can best be described as integrative, combining psychodynamic and evidenced-based approaches. She draws upon mindfulness, CBT and DBT, while at the same time, employing self and relational psychology, to facilitate client understanding of how past and present underlying experiences – physical, emotional, and sociocultural – influence client thoughts, emotions, behaviors. Through the lens of the mind-body connection, certain holistic practices, and empathic attunement, therapist and client work together to lessen client distress and foster client relationships with others.
Working with Dr. Borenstein, clients can expect connection and to be challenged. Through reflection and a touch of humor, rather than merely addressing symptoms, Dr. Borenstein hopes to open the door to greater client self-development and awareness and the creation of more lasting client change.
Dr. Borenstein believes that the key to a good therapist/client relationship is empathic communication and thoughtful listening to both what is said and unsaid. Dr. Borenstein views the therapeutic relationship as one in which the client feels truly seen and heard, where lived experiences, strengths, identity, and inherent dignity are honored and courage in the face of life’s uncertainty is cultivated.
