About Us

New York Mental Health Center is a group telehealth practice that is made up of a broad range of talented therapists, all of which are expert practitioners within their focus areas. They have the training and experience to deliver care across cognitive, dialectical, and mindfulness-based behavior therapies, teaching our clients practical tools for leading a more fulfilling life.

We believe that effective therapy combines different techniques based on each patient’s goals and preferences, the therapist’s expertise, and contemporary research on effective treatments.

Our practice director talks about NY Mental Health Center.

Why Telehealth?

The post-COVID telehealth boom has been revolutionary for mental health services. It has many benefits:

  • Breaks geographical barriers, providing access to mental health services for those in remote areas or with mobility issues. This fosters inclusivity, ensuring no one is left behind in seeking vital support.
  • Enhances convenience, saving clients time, money and energy by eliminating travel to appointments.
  • Promotes comfort and privacy, allowing individuals to engage with their therapist from the familiarity and security of their own environment, which can facilitate more open and honest communication.
  • Offers more flexible scheduling options, accommodating busy lifestyles and enabling consistency by reducing missed appointments.
  • In times of extreme weather or crisis, telehealth ensures continuity of care, ensuring individuals can receive support when traditional in-person options might be limited.
  • Provides greater access to therapists than can be found in your local area. Our team provides access to talented therapists with deep expertise in many specialties from all over the state of NY.

Types of Therapies Offered

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT is a widely used therapeutic approach that examines the connections between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It operates on the premise that our thoughts influence our emotions and behaviors, and by identifying and challenging negative or distorted thoughts, individuals can effectively manage their emotions and change their behaviors. CBT techniques often involve restructuring negative thought patterns and practicing new coping skills. CBT empowers individuals with practical tools to address a range of mental health issues, including anxiety disorders, depression, and phobias.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

DBT is a type of CBT that emphasizes validation, acceptance, and change to help individuals who struggle with regulating intense emotions. Developed primarily for individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD), DBT integrates elements of cognitive therapy, mindfulness, and dialectics, which involves balancing acceptance and change. It teaches skills in four main areas: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness.

Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a form of psychotherapy that encourages individuals to accept their thoughts and feelings rather than trying to control or eliminate them. ACT teaches mindfulness skills to help clients become more aware of their thoughts and emotions in the present moment without judgment. Through various exercises and techniques, individuals learn to identify their core values and take committed action towards living a meaningful life aligned with those values, even in the presence of difficult thoughts and emotions. ACT aims to foster psychological flexibility, enabling individuals to develop a healthier relationship with their inner experiences and pursue a fulfilling life guided by their values.

Mindfulness

Mindfulness refers to the intentional practice of paying attention to the present moment with openness, curiosity, and acceptance. Through mindfulness exercises, clients learn to observe their thoughts, feelings, and bodily sensations without becoming overwhelmed or attached to them. This heightened awareness enables clients to respond to life's challenges with greater clarity and equanimity, ultimately fostering a sense of inner peace and well-being. Mindfulness has been shown to be effective in treating anxiety, depression, and stress-related disorders.
